Originally conceived for use on Alaskan snow, the key to a fatbike is its large volume/ low pressure tyre combo (generally 3.8"+) which provides enough floatation and traction to pedal over soft, unstable and otherwise un-passable terrain. Aka, perfect for exploring the path less travelled!
The Caribou is a little different in that it's not tied-down to specific single-season use, and much, much more than a just 'snow bike'. The trail-orientated geometry and fat tyres lend themselves well to year-round use, excelling equally as well in typical UK riding conditions like mud, bog, wet roots and loose rock as with the white stuff.
Besides introducing a new, smaller 16" frame size, a lower, more competitive price and painting it a nice subtle, unassuming colour what's new for 2015?…
For starters we've swapped in VeeRubber's 26x4.0" Mission's - great all-round trail tyres with a fast-rolling, open and aggressive tread and of the 72TPI, folding bead variety - making them competitively light for their size (1450g). They're mounted to Weinmann HL80 singlewall rims that have been drilled to help save weight and spin on smooth-rolling KT sealed cartridge bearing hubs. We've also lowered the gearing via the 30T front chainring paired with the wide-range 11-36T cassette for a more fatbike-friendly spread of gears.
At the helm you'll find our new 'Alt' handlebar, nice and wide @ 720mm, its generous 20° backsweep is designed to places wrists and shoulders in a more neutral, comfortable position whilst the forward wiggle should mean not having to compensate with stem length.
TRP's brand new Spyke mechanical disc brake ulitize a clever dual piston action (no static slave pad = better pad/rotor clearance, no rubbing and easier setup) and bring with them easier middle-of-nowhere serviceability and repairs. And to help squeeze out every last bit of performance, we've combined them with Jagwire KEB-SL compression-less cable outer.
It's not often you get more for less, but we're convinced we've nailed it with the 2015 Caribou - every bit as fun as it looks!
